Digital Shorts 2009

Commissioned by Exeter Phoenix Media Centre, South West Screen & The UK FILM COUNCIL with support from DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL

Ashley Thorpe - 'The Hairy Hands'
Animator Ashley Thorpe was first introduced to Exeter Phoenix Media Centre two years ago. His film ‘The Vampire’, produced under his own ‘Carrion Films’ label, was screened at Exeter Phoenix’s monthly ‘Creative Collective’ event for budding filmmakers. Audiences were instantly captivated by Ashley’s unique animation style, comprising an unusual mix of hand painted matte textures, fragmented photography, live-footage and post-production, with a suspense and drama befitting old school horror studios.

Supported by Devon County Council, Exeter Phoenix Media Centre awarded Ashley a ‘Green Light Commission’ in 2008 to help develop his ambitious film ‘Scayrecrow’. It went on to win a ‘Media Innovation Award’ for best film earlier this year and was recently selected to be screened at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner. In 2008, Ashley also won over the judging panel for our Digital Animation Bursary and produced his third film ‘The Screaming Skull’ with further support from Exeter City Council. ‘Screaming Skull’ was premiered at Exeter Phoenix’s annual Two Short Nights film festival, and demonstrated a significant development in Ashley’s animation style.

Toby DeBurgh - 'The Undertow'
Toby DeBurgh also came to Exeter Phoenix Media Centre’s attention through a ‘Creative Collective’ event where one of his films was screened. He went on to complete a NCFE in Video Production at the Media Centre and was awarded an Exeter Phoenix Short Film Production Bursary in 2008 shortly afterwards. This enabled Toby to produce ‘Distraction’, which was not only premiered at the Two Short Night’s film festival in December 2008, but also won the festival’s overall ‘Best Film’ award, selected by the judging panel comprising a number of professionals from the regional film industry.

Digital Shorts Commissions
As part of the Digital Shorts scheme, Ashley Thorpe will be able to work as Writer/Director and Animator on his next film ‘The Hairy Hands’. Toby DeBurgh will be writing and directing 'The Undertow’.
